Products like this are integral to my work but moreover, they are interesting, innovative, and fill a need. Our first device this month comes from Allotrope Medical.
Ureteral stents are tubes that are typically placed (with the help of a cystoscope) during surgeries, in order to avoid obstruction of or assist with urine flow from the kidneys. Typical complications are consistent with any foreign object placement, including infection, dislocation, and blocking by encrustation. Allotrope aims to help avoid these placements: "Over one million minimally invasive procedures are done each year in the US that require identification of the ureters. Preoperative placement of ureteral stents to assist in this process are costly, and do not prevent ureteral injury from occurring. Alternatively, extensive tissue dissection to identify the ureters is time consuming and itself risks injury. Allotrope will remove the need for ureteral stent placement, and may identify the ureter to prevent injuries before they occur." They go on to say that the device that will help accomplish these things is handheld, intuitive, and offers precise ureter detection.
Other benefits, as listed on Alltrope's website include:
- Easy to use, and disposable
- Serves as both a ureter locator and blunt dissection tool
- Avoids cystoscopy and urology consults
- Increases surgical efficiency by avoiding ureter dissection and tissue crushing
- No risk of foreign object placement (ureteral stents)
